Looking to unlock new expression in your guitar playing? Here's one easy fingerpicking technique that will forever change the way you approach the instrument—and open the door to a whole new level of musicality.

Let’s jump right in.

WHAT IS P-I-M-A?

Think of fingerpicking just like walking: if you don't know which foot goes first, you're going to trip.

That’s where the PIMA system comes in—a centuries-old method from Spanish guitar tradition that gives each finger on your picking hand a clear and consistent role.

In PIMA, each letter corresponds to a finger:

  • P = Pulgar (Thumb)

  • I = Índice (Index Finger)

  • M = Medio (Middle Finger)

  • A = Anular (Ring Finger)

Some advanced players also use the pinky (meñique or chico), but it’s less common due to its weaker control.

Ok we named the fingers.... now what??

All that's left is to learn where each finger would be "stepping".

WHICH STRINGS DO I PLAY?

Here's how to assign fingers to strings using the PIMA method:

  • P (Thumb) → Plays the E, A, and D strings (bass notes)

  • I (Index) → Plays the G string

  • M (Middle) → Plays the B string

  • A (Ring) → Plays the high E string

Ok we learned to walk, now we can learn some steps to get the fingers dancing.

Here are three beginner-friendly PIMA fingerpicking exercises. Grab your guitar (acoustic, classical, or even electric) and give them a try! Start each one slowly and keep a steady rhythm.

FINAL THOUGHTS
